Impact of Breaches

Financial Loss

According to recent research, 91% of database attacks lead to financial loss[1], with an average cost per breached record of $182[1]. Many more attacks remain unreported – unlike the US, European companies are not obliged to notify consumers if their data has been breached.

And there are disincentives to disclose details of a security breach; a survey by Ipsos MORI noted that 58% of consumers would take their business elsewhere following a breach of their personal data.

Damage to Reputation

As more personal information and financial transactions are digitalised, customers have to trust that an organisation will keep their information safe, yet this has never been so difficult to accomplish.

Ipsos MORI learned that 14% of all high-income (£25,000 P/A) earners in the UK have been victims of data theft. 95% of those surveyed were concerned about some aspect of the security of their personal data, with 83% specifying the security of their bank and credit card details as being their priority concern.

An organisation that fails to protect its data assets can suffer severe damage - including loss of credibility, customers and revenue. Without getting to grips with using the new generation of effective database protection, it is evident that customers will punish the service-providers for their lack of efficiency and respect for their security.

Additional findings from the MORI poll of consumers include:

  • 45% do not think that banks and online retailers do enough to protect their personal data
  • Only 5% were not worried about data loss
  • 36% would not put personal information online, yet 11% of this group have still been a victim of data theft
